I’m a designer—I love seeing which colors, typefaces, textures, and styles are having their moment. Trends can introduce us to something unexpected, inspire a fresh direction, and keep the creative world moving forward.
But they aren’t a brand strategy.
Because what happens when the color everyone is using no longer feels current? What happens when the trendy font you loved starts appearing on every other business in your industry? Or when the aesthetic you built your entire brand around stops feeling like you?
You are left with a brand that was designed for a moment instead of one designed to grow with you.
That is why I will choose stories over trends every time.
A trendy brand might catch someone’s eye. But a story-driven brand gives them a reason to stay.
Your story is the combination of experiences, values, perspectives, and beliefs that shaped your business. It influences why you started, how you serve people, what you care about, and what makes your approach different.
And unlike a passing design trend, your story cannot be copied.
Someone else can use a similar color palette. They can choose the same font, follow the same Instagram trend, or create a website inspired by the same Pinterest board.
But they cannot replicate the life you have lived, the reason you began, or the way those experiences shape the work you do.
That is where a memorable brand begins.
One of the biggest misconceptions about branding is that it begins with choosing colors and designing a logo.
Those things matter—but they shouldn’t come first.
Before we decide what your brand should look like, we need to understand what it should communicate.
What do you believe?
Why does your work matter to you?
How do you want people to feel when they interact with your business?
What parts of your personality, experience, or perspective belong in the brand?
What do you want to be known for?
When those answers guide the creative direction, your visual identity becomes more than something pretty. Every color, typeface, texture, and design choice has a reason to be there.
Your brand doesn’t just look like your business.
It feels like you.
Trends often become popular because they work. But once everyone begins using the same muted palette, whimsical font, hand-drawn icon style, or perfectly imperfect aesthetic, the brands using them can start to become indistinguishable.
That doesn’t mean you need to avoid anything currently popular. It means you need to ask why it belongs in your brand.
Is this color connected to the feeling you want to create—or have you simply seen it everywhere lately?
Does this font reflect your personality—or does it look like the businesses you follow?
Does this design style support your message—or are you choosing it because it feels safe and familiar?
There is a big difference between thoughtfully incorporating a trend and building your identity around one.
Trends can support your brand. They just shouldn’t define it.
When your brand is rooted in your story and supported by a clear strategy, you gain something even more valuable than a cohesive visual identity: a filter for making decisions.
You know which opportunities align with your business.
You know what belongs in your messaging and what doesn’t.
You know how your brand should sound, look, and feel—even as it continues to evolve.
Instead of reinventing your business every time you sit down to create something, you have a foundation to return to.
That foundation allows your brand to grow without losing what makes it recognizable. You can update your website, introduce new services, refine your messaging, or embrace elements of a new trend without becoming an entirely different business every season.
Consistency doesn’t mean never changing.
It means knowing what should remain true while everything else evolves.
Story-driven branding doesn’t mean putting your entire life online or turning every piece of content into a deeply personal confession.
It means allowing the truth of your business to shape how it shows up.
Maybe your playful visual identity reflects the joy you want families to experience when they walk through your doors.
Maybe your warm, layered branding comes from a belief that travel should feel personal, storied, and full of connection.
Maybe your bold typography reflects the confidence you want your clients to feel after working with you.
The most meaningful design choices aren’t arbitrary. They connect what your business believes to what your audience sees and experiences.
That is what makes a brand feel intentional.
You don’t need to predict what design will look like five years from now. And you don’t need to create a brand that never changes.
Your business will evolve. Your audience may grow. Your services may shift. Your visual identity may eventually need to change with them.
But when your brand begins with a strong story, you aren’t starting over every time it evolves. You are building from something real.
So gather inspiration. Pay attention to what feels fresh. Save the trends that genuinely excite you.
But before you build your brand around what is popular, ask yourself:
Will this still feel like me when the trend has passed?
A brand built on story doesn’t need to keep reinventing itself to stay relevant.
It just needs to keep telling the truth—consistently and in a way people recognize. That is the brand people remember long after the trend cycle has moved on to whatever is next.
Because the brands that last aren’t necessarily the ones that look the most current.
They are the ones that know who they are.
And if your brand feels like it is chasing something instead of standing for something, that usually isn’t a design problem.
It’s a story problem.
And that is where I would start.
